It was so satisfying to get back to working on some TV audio projects in May after the inevitable, and necessary, slowdown in the film and TV industries during March and April. Whilst the landscape for all of us is still uncertain and worrying, I’m happy to be able to share some more positive news in the form of another project of mine going live on UK TV.

After celebrating my work on the new KIKKOMAN sponsorship campaign late last month, this week I’m happy to share details of another UK TV ad campaign featuring my work going to broadcast. I spent the first half of May working with KOALA on the production of the UK TV advert for CAMINO WINDS, the new novel by the NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING author JOHN GRISHAM. Released in the UK by publisher HODDER & STOUGHTON, the new book is the follow up to GRISHAM’S 2017 novel CAMINO ISLAND.

Here is the advert, which is live now on SKY video-on-demand services.

This was such a fun project to work on as the brief gave me a lot of room to experiment with the audio. The client was keen to include both sound design and music but they weren’t overly prescriptive, which is music to the ears of an audio designer! The visuals gave me lots of scope to design some detailed sound effect tracks, with particular highlights for me being the sea waves, the underwater transition and the thunderstorm at the end of the ad.

Music-wise, I composed from scratch for this project and surprised myself with how quickly I managed to turn around a piece which hits that sweet spot between crime thriller, Hollywood trailer, and tropical vista. These three moods sprang to mind upon watching the rough edits, and I’m happy that they’re the same three that come to mind upon watching the final product.

I’ve decided to name the piece of music I wrote for this project CAMINO, and as it is not licensed to the client on an exclusive basis it may be useful for other projects or licensing opportunities in the future. You can listen to CAMINO in full here.

After the very positive response to the KIKKOMAN campaign and the launch of this new JOHN GRISHAM advert, I can close the book on a very strange but very productive month of May. My usual slate of live audio work is still on indefinite hold due to COVID-19, and it’s likely that this side of my work won’t pick up again this year. The silver lining is having the time and opportunity to work on creative audio projects from my home studio. Keep your eyes open for news on the next one very soon.
